This morning, at 11 am, under the auspices of the Society of Friends of Art, the inauguration of the fresco painted by Mr. Pierre Girieud and his students took place at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Zamalek. For the creation of this fresco, the dimensions of which are roughly three by five meters, it was necessary to build a special wall in a large veranda of the School. For three months, Pierre Girieud, called on a special mission to the School, had been teaching his students the difficult art of "a fresco" painting, the characteristic of which was that it was executed on a freshly prepared mortar and amalgamate with it; such a paint can withstand bad weather and achieves the most perfect adaptation of paint to modern architecture with which it accommodates happily due to its large wall surfaces devoid of decorative ornaments. The fresco painted by Mr. Girieud and his students represents Sultan Ahmed Ibn Toulum assisting in the construction of his mosque in the year 295 of Egire. The sultan, escorted from his suite, and dressed in a luxurious robe, listens to the speech made by the construction master while near the masons are busy. The whole is very harmonious. We admire both the elegance and the sobriety of the shapes combined with the richness of the colors. The details of the sultan's tunic are borrowed from a mural by Samara as well as the banner that frames the fresco. In addition, we paid less attention to reproducing the costumes and characters in their historical truth than making a work of art. The inauguration this morning was attended by a large number of Cairo personalities among whom we noted: Mr. de Vitasse, Minister of France, Mr. Rémond, controller general of Fine Arts, Mr. Innocenti, director of the School of Fine Arts , Mrs. and Mr. Jaro Hilbert, Mrs. Boeglin, Mrs. and Mr. Beppi Martin, Mr. Roger Bréval, Mr. Boyrie, Mr. Cluzel, Mr. Sabbgh, etc. - Photo of personalities Mr. Rémond, Mr. Minister of the United States, HE Allou Pasha, Mr. Girieud, Mahmoud bey Khalil (photo Bourse) - photo of the painting Lourmarin, of games in the meadow
