Contained about Girieud
p. 726 - Yet he is an artist who seems to have made a decisive step this year. I am all the more pleased to pay tribute to him that I think I was one of his first defenders, without sparing him any criticism. It's Mr. Pierre Girieud. His two studies of nudes, especially the nude who is not in a landscape, prove to us that the period of research that is too exclusively intellectual, almost abstract, where the painter once lingered, is happily out of date. Without giving up his drawings of pure and vast decoration, he looked at the nature, observed it directly, with passion, and he realized an admirable work of plastic richness and expressive intensity. There is sensitivity and tenderness, there is also pain and thought in this powerful sculptural female nude with a wealth of colors; It's a big page. It is for Mr. Pierre Girieud a new departure, by a wider road, towards a higher goal. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.730 - Nudes abound in this twenty-fifth exhibition. This is a trait that fortunately distinguishes it from previous ones where landscapes and still lifes took up almost all the walls. .... The nude studies in this salon are reproached for their sadness; I believe that this general reproach would not be just... The nude figures of MM. Puy, Boussingault, Lhote are in no way distressing and there is in those of M. Pierre Girieud mystical austerity, not sadness. ....
